The World’s Purest Titanium from Engebø
Approaching Completion
Nordic Mining is on the verge of realising one of Norway’s most exciting industrial ventures at Engebø Mountain by Førdefjorden. This is the first new mine to open in Norway in 40 years, and the project is on track for completion in the fourth quarter of 2024. The mine will extract rutile and garnet, contributing to both sustainable solutions and the green transition.
Rutile is essential for the production of titanium metal, which is used in everything from aircraft and medical equipment to everyday products, thanks to its lightweight and durability. Garnet, also extracted here, is used for sandblasting and industrial processes.
– “This project is a significant step for Norwegian industry and demonstrates how we can contribute to a more sustainable future,” says Tone Løtuft, Communications Manager at Nordic Mining.
The mining project, led by Nordic Mining, brings together several strong players to ensure top quality and progress. It is structured into four main contracts (EPC):
- EPC 1: Contractor Service (groundworks)
- EPC 2: Åsen og Øvrelid (concrete and construction)
- EPC 3: Nordic Bulk (mechanical installation)
- EPC 4: Normatic (automation)
Svein Jarle Reiakvam, Project Manager in Normatic’s industrial division, explains that the company is responsible for automation solutions, including MCC rooms, control rooms, and data rooms.
– “We ensure that the systems work seamlessly, and we reached out to Blix Datagulv, a reliable partner we know we can trust,” he says.
Blix Datagulv: A Key Player in the Final Phase
Blix Datagulv has been brought in by Normatic as part of EPC 4 to install technical flooring solutions in the automation rooms. The work began in November, and Neil Johnsen, Project Manager at Blix Datagulv, describes this as a significant milestone.
– “We are grateful for the trust and proud to contribute to the completion of such a large-scale project,” he says.
The customised flooring ensures that cabling systems and heavy equipment function optimally while also providing flexibility for future needs.
– “This is a critical part of the project, and we are pleased to deliver in line with the high standards required,” Neil Johnsen adds.
Tone Løtuft from Nordic Mining highlights collaboration as a key factor.
– “We are very pleased with how all parties have delivered according to plan. It shows what we can achieve when we work together towards a common goal,” she says.
With completion within reach, Nordic Mining and its partners look forward to putting the Engebø mine into operation at the turn of the year 2024/2025. This marks a new era for Norwegian mining and a vital contribution to global demand for sustainable materials.
